Cornered and defeated on the battlefield, Qi Min makes a final desperate play. He takes the Emperor hostage in the throne room, holding a blade to the sovereign's throat. His demands are simple: safe passage out of the capital with Prince Kang, or the Emperor dies. The court is in a standoff that seems impossible to resolve.
Xie Zheng enters the throne room alone, as Qi Min demands. The two men face each other one final time. Qi Min delivers a bitter monologue about the corruption of the system — how he started as an idealist who wanted to reform the government, only to become the monster he fought against. There is a kernel of truth in his words, and Xie Zheng acknowledges it.
The standoff is broken by Changyu, who enters through a servants' passage that Qi Min's guards overlooked. Using the distraction, Xie Zheng disarms Qi Min in a swift, decisive move. Prince Kang surrenders immediately. Qi Min, defeated and exhausted, offers no further resistance. As he is led away, he tells Xie Zheng: "You'll find the system is harder to change than any man."
