Changyu's Gambit

With the military situation stalemated, Changyu makes an audacious move: she travels to the border herself, defying convention and risking her life. She does not go to Yunzhou — instead, she heads to the Tuoba camp with Bai Yue and a small guard, carrying trade goods and a proposal. She has learned that the Tuoba confederation attacked not out of aggression but out of desperation — a famine ravaged their lands, and they need grain more than territory.

In a tense negotiation scene, Changyu faces the Tuoba chieftain's wife, a formidable woman named Helian Mingyue. Changyu proposes a trade arrangement: grain in exchange for peace, bypassing the corrupt imperial supply system entirely. Helian Mingyue is skeptical but intrigued — no Han official has ever spoken to her as an equal. Changyu's directness and lack of pretension remind Helian Mingyue of the steppe women she admires.

A tentative ceasefire is reached. When word arrives at Yunzhou, Xie Zheng is simultaneously relieved, furious, and overwhelmed with pride. His wife, the butcher's daughter, has done what the entire imperial army could not — she has stopped the war.
