The sheer scale and grandeur of the city overwhelm her, but she refuses to show weakness before the servants sent to escort her to the Marquis's estate. Her plain traveling clothes and straightforward manner immediately mark her as an outsider among the nobility.
At the Xuanping Marquis's residence, the head steward Steward Zhou and the household staff regard her with poorly concealed disdain. Xie Zheng is conspicuously absent — he has deliberately gone to the military barracks. Changyu is shown to a modest side courtyard rather than the main wife's quarters, a pointed slight she notices immediately.
