With dozens of Chinese historical dramas competing for attention each season, deciding whether to invest 40 episodes into a new series is a legitimate concern. Pursuit of Jade (逐玉) has generated enormous buzz since its premiere, but does it live up to the hype? What works brilliantly: The lead performances are the drama's greatest asset. Zhang Linghe delivers a career-defining turn as Xie Zheng, bringing devastating vulnerability to a character who could easily have been a one-note brooding hero. His physical transformation — losing 15 kilograms to portray the gaunt, ailing marquis — lends an unsettling authenticity to the early episodes. Tian Xiwei matches him scene for scene as Yu Qianqian/Fan Changyu, bringing infectious warmth and sharp intelligence to a character who must navigate a world she doesn't fully understand.
